Experience Stravinsky's groundbreaking "The Rite of Spring" with the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra on April 24.
With its modernist use of meter, rhythm, and dissonance, Stravinsky's seminal work was composed for the 1913 ballet depicting a pagan Russian sacrifice to usher in the spring. Audiences were shocked by Vaslav Najinsky's angular and lurching choreography. Between the jarring music and controversial dancing—alongside simmering class tensions between "Bohemian" and wealthy patrons—the opening night is infamous for the audience's alleged uproar and fights.

William Grant Still’s vibrant and groundbreaking compositions anchor the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra’s first concert of the fall quarter. Cumbia y Congo fuses spirited string quartets with hand percussion, while Summerland evokes a dreamy apparition of heaven. His spirited “Can’t cha line ‘em” draws from a blues folk melody depicting African American chain gangs working on railroads. Bookending the concert are Luigi Boccherini’s elegant Symphony No. 19 in E-flat Major and Haydn’s scintillating Symphony No. 101 in D Major.

When a tyrant duke becomes jealous and a wrestling match sparks love, the pastoral Forest of Arden suddenly becomes a haven for banished cousins Rosalind and Celia, the noble Orlando, and a motley group of shepherds, jesters, and courtiers. In the face of exile, Rosalind and Celia don male disguises and take matters into their own hands in the pursuit of love. All the world's a stage in this rollicking comedy, and its characters are the cleverest of players. Written over 400 years ago but charming as ever, Shakespeare's As You Like It is jam-packed with mistaken identities, mysterious letters, witty banter, and a forest of lovers.
